Rani Mukerji chastised for claiming Indian films are the best in the world: ‘Audacity of fighting Iranian cinema with the 12th fail’

Rani Mukerji recently stated that India’makes the best films in the world’, citing Vikrant Massey’s film 12th Fail, which is based on the life of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. Rani made the comment during a recent conversation with Galatta Plus in response to filmmaker Prithvi Konanur’s claim that Iranian cinema was superior to Indian cinema in terms of ideas. Rani’s comment drew criticism on X (previously Twitter), with some saying, ‘Rani’s view is as rubbish as it gets’.

What is Prithvi Konanur said.
Before Rani Mukerji interjected, Prithvi Konanur had stated, “I encourage people to watch Iranian films. Observe them. Our films and their flicks differ significantly. I believe we are, for some reason, much behind Iranian cinema. This is my honest view. I encourage people to view Iranian films and see how advanced they are in terms of concepts, perhaps not in terms of technology, but in terms of where they stand.”

Rani Mukerji’s Contra
Rani reacted, “So I want to say something here because I’m insulted by his statement that we should learn from other people cinema. I believe that Indian cinema is the best in the world, thus I disagree with it. I’m sorry, but if you want to talk about films with roots, I think you should see 12th Fail. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film is wonderful, and it is about India… Everything is depicted brilliantly… I believe that we in India produce the most diversified films. Films from outside India lack the diversity that India has.I believe Indian cinema has a lot to offer and is among the best in the world.

Responses to She Comments:
Responding to a tweet that read, “India makes the best films in the world – Rani Mukerji.” “Do you agree?” One X user tweeted, “I haven’t seen many Iranian films, but I doubt any of the acclaimed ones had the protagonist in brownface the entire time to appear ‘poor’ the way 12th Fail did. Rani’s view is as rubbish as it gets, and Karan Johar (who was sitting next to her throughout the discussion) adored Animal. This sums up the airheads who control Bollywood.

Another added, “This is what happens when people don’t watch enough movies from other countries.” Not one thing Rani Mukerji stated made sense.” Another tweet read, “Saying India is the finest and that we make the best films is meaningless. Others should say this about us. This seems pompous.

A user on X said, as well, “lol the audacity of casually countering the argued brilliance of Iranian cinema with 12th fail.” One wrote on social media, “The truly hilarious thing about that Rani Mukerji quote from the roundtable is that her prime example was Satyajit Ray, an individual who had nothing but contempt for the kind of Indian cinema Rani makes (laughing emoji).”

In response to Rani’s statement, someone added, “We make a variety of films, but it doesn’t mean we’re the finest in the world. If Rani’s claims are correct, why do our films struggle to find a place in the international circuit? our films are banal, subpar.”

About the 12th Fail:
